Why are we electing judges?

Is it comforting to think that when you have your day in court, the presiding judge is there because he’s a good politician [or that voters simply liked the sound of his or her name on the ballot, better than that of opponents']?
Shouldn’t judges be evaluated and appointed by some sort of executive advisory board … ?
